Drum Jumper Instructions:

  1. Check engine oil and fill hydraulic tank with the same hydraulic oil you use in your mixer fleet. Keep fluid level 1" to 1 ½" below top of hydraulic tank. Fill gas tank with fresh unleaded gasoline having a pump octane rating of 86 or higher. Sta-Bil is recommended in the gas.


  2. Place the Neoprene spacer on the mixer fender. Set the Drum Jumper on the mixer fender, level and securely strap it in place. Two straps are provided with each Drum Jumper.
    • On rear discharge trucks you may have to set the Drum Jumper near the rear of the truck on the mixer fender. Extension hoses will be necessary because of the extended distance between the hydraulic drive motor and Drum Jumper.
    • If the extension hoses are empty when hooking up, you will experience inoperative low pressures until the lines fill up with oil. Recheck hydraulic fluid in the Drum Jumper tank and add if necessary.

  3. Make sure the truck engine is off, and break the lines loose. Disconnect each line, one at a time, and connect 1" Drum Jumper lines. When connecting, move Drum Jumper line plugs to the mixer lines to minimize spillage. These 1" high pressure lines are your mix and discrarge lines. Connect the remaining low pressure line to the 3/4" hydraulic drain fitting.


  4. If you have a truck engine problem and will be trying to start the engine with Drum Jumper hooked up, you must first loop the mixer's two hydraulic motor high-pressure lines with the fitting provided. The mixer's ¾" low pressure return line must be tightly plugged. This will allow you to start the engine without damaging the truck's hydraulic system and allow the Drum Jumper to run as a separate hydraulic unit.


  5. Start the Drum Jumper with the valve in the neutral position, let the engine warm up. Move the throttle to full speed and pull the valve slowly towards you. The drum will start turning. If it is discharging, move the valve handle in the opposite direction to mix.


  6. If there is a possibility the ready mix truck will be broke down for more than an hour, it is recommended adding water and/or retarder immediately to raise the slump to 6" or 7", or approximately 1200 PSI. The Drum Jumper turns the drum at approximately 2 RPM's, so it will take 10 to 15 minutes of mixing to raise the slump and lower the hydraulic pressure.


  7. The size of the load, hydraulic pressure, humidity and air temperature determine how long you can run the Drum Jumper. Tests were concluded after an hour of running time, 1200 PSI on the pressure gauge and 87°F air temperature. The Drum Jumper's hydraulic oil temperature was 160°F.
    **DO NOT LET HYDRAULIC OIL TEMPERATURE EXCEED 200°.
    DAMAGE TO HYDRAULICS COULD RESULT!**

  8. If hydraulic oil reaches 200°F, turn off the Drum Jumper to cool or try the following:
    • Move the control valve to the neutral position and run the Subaru engine at a fast idle. The hydraulic oil will cool.
    • Raise concrete slump, lower pressure to 800 PSI, run the mixer RPM at a dead slow agitate and run the engine at a fast idle.
    • Cool tank with ice or water.

  9. To discharge a full load of concrete we recommend a 3" slump or greater.

Testing The Drum Jumper Without Hooking Up To A Truck

Check gas, engine oil and hydraulic oil before testing. Always imspect all haydraulic hoses for wear and cracking. Replace if necessary.

Make sure all hose plugs are tightly secured in the ends of the hydraulic lines. Start the engine with the control valve in the neutral position and let warm up.

Rev engine to full throttle and work the valve handle slowly in either direction. At 2750 PSI you will be loading the engine to the maximum. Do not run for more than 5 seconds at this pressure. This is a test and the drum you are saving should not require this much pressure after the first revolution. Pressuring over 2750 PSI will stall the engine.

In most situations you will be raising the slump and lowering the hydraulic pressure immediately by adding water and/or retarder to the load. At 1200 PSI, (approximately 6"-7" slump) the Drum Jumper will not be laboring. High slump and low pressure are necessary to run the Drum Jumper for extended periods of time.

After the test is completed, move the valve handle to its neutral position and let the engine idle. Turn off the gas valve and run gas our of carburetor.

Storing The Drum Jumper

It is important that your Drum Jumper is always ready to use. These steps must be included in your maintenance program. A properly stored and maintained Drum Jumper will insure availability to your company for many years.

If you or your mechanic have been involved in a mixer rotation problem and had to jump hydraulics truck to truck, these simple steps to follow will be well worth your time. Your mechanic knows in the event of a rotating drum problem, having a Drum Jumper will make everyone's job much easier.

Before shipping, The Drum Jumper's engine crankcase has been filled with 10/30 multi viscosity oil. The engine has been started and the hydraulics pressured to 2750 PSI. The hydraulic oil has been drained for shipping and will have to be refilled before using or storing. The gas has been run out.

We recommend starting the Drum Jumper once a month and letting it warm up. When finished, turn off the gas valve and run the engine until the carburetor is out of gas. Sta-bil in the gas is recommended.
